Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate.

American Red Cross Lifeguard classes are for adults or young adults age 15 and over. Blended Learning lifeguard training classes provide 7 hours of online coursework to be completed prior to entering the classroom. This will enable the in-person lifeguard training sessions to be held in a shorter amount of time.

Seven hours of online coursework needs to be completed by the first day of class. You will receive a record verifying your successful completion of the online portion and this should be brought to the first day of class. Course material will be sent to the email you provide in the week before in-person learning begins.

Completion of the online coursework alone does not certify you as a lifeguard.

Participants are required to attend all classes. No Exceptions! Classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  You must schedule the swimming pretests before you can register.

This course is strictly limited to those individuals that are at least 15 years of age at the start of the course and are able successfully demonstrate the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation.

The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is completed before you can register for the class and includes the following skills:

  • 300-Yard Swim: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread Water: Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates must place their hands under the armpits and keep their head above water.
  • Timed Event: Starting in the water, swim 20-yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound dive brick, return to the surface, swim 20-yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the brick and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Swim goggles are not allowed. Candidates should not swim the return distance underwater.

The skills evaluation is design to determine whether individuals have the overall strength, endurance and comfort in the water that is necessary to successfully participate in the class.

Registrants are invited to use the YMCA pool in the weeks leading up to the class to gain strength and experience in these prerequisites.

COVID-19 protocols and best practices will be followed when possible. However the nature of lifeguarding requires close contact with individuals during water rescues. Participants are advised that in water rescue skills will require close contact. Participants will be assigned to pods to reduce exposure opportunities.
