2020 Annual Meeting                                                                                                                 May 26, 2020
Greater Johnstown Community YMCA

Dear YMCA Family,

I am very sorry that, due to the unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in, we are unable to meet in person for our annual meeting especially this year as we are celebrating our 150th anniversary. However, in order to keep everyone informed the Board has decided to present our Annual Report via social media.

We are about to close our 2019/2020 fiscal year and we never thought we would find ourselves in this situation we are in. As you are aware the YMCA was shut down by a statewide mandate to “stay at home” to prevent and slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. We are currently continuing in this mode until the Governor’s office lifts this mandate and allows for the reopening of our facility. We are monitoring this situation daily will open as soon as we are allowed to within the guidelines set forth by the Governor and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The YMCA has faced some additional challenges during the past year but we have attempted to review these situations, seek advice and guidance, and have continued to move forward with the intent to continue to make the YMCA a vital component of the Johnstown community. We began the fiscal year operating under a management agreement with the Ligonier YMCA to “share” their executive director. This was very beneficial to us and helped us to become much more fiscally responsible. When the term of that agreement ended we entered into an interim CEO agreement with a former Y CEO. He was able to help us to begin to lay the ground work for hiring a permanent full time Chief Executive Director (CEO). We successfully completed this in November when Mr. Shawn Sebring joined our YMCA family. Shawn came to us from the Indiana Y where he served as the Senior Program Manager. During his 6 months on the job, Shawn has brought back to the Y the culture and mission of how a YMCA should and can be operated.

During his brief tenure Shawn has been able to increase memberships, secure new grant opportunities, create and build new relationships in the community and begin the rebuilding of our YMCA needs. This momentum was brought to a halt when the pandemic hit. During the shutdown Shawn has continued to work to frame the future he sees for our Y. I am excited for the day when we can open our doors and welcome our members back. I know you will see a new Y, a better Y, and a Y that will work hard to meet the needs of our community.

While we still face a large financial debt, I believe that our membership, community and the Board all want to see the Y succeed and grow. We will continue to ask for everyone’s support through our annual campaign as we work hard to become fiscally sound so that for the next 150 years the community of Johnstown will have a YMCA they can count on.

During the next few weeks please watch our website and other social media sites as we will be posting updates regarding the status of our reopening and the guidelines that will need to be followed. We anxiously await the day we can welcome everyone back so that you too can see the new Y that awaits you. The Board of Directors is committed to the success and growth of the Y and the staff is here to serve you our members. Together we will continue to lay the new foundation for the YMCA for the next 150 years.

Thank you for your continued support for the YMCA. This is your Y and together we make an amazing family.
